The Karunya Charitable Society (Reg:914/2002) at Chengaloor near Pudukad in District of Thrissur was registered in 2002 with the intention of extending care and services to the mentally challenged who are unwanted, unsupported and alienated from everyone in the community. This is sincere attempt of zealous young men of this locality. Their first attempt was of to take the patients to mental health centers for medical consultation and supply medicines, keeping them in their own homes. Later on with the help of the local people they purchased a plot of 35 cents with the goal of making a home for the mentally challenged. One part of the proposed plan was completed on 21-12-2006 His Eminence Arch Bishop Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy lighting the lamp in the chapel of the home inaugurated Karunya Nikethan To ensure the further development of the center the members of the society thought of operating its activities in collaboration with Divyahrudayashram Chennnaipara, which was a source of inspiration for all of them. Finally it was decided to make an agreement with Missionary Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament (MCBS- a Congregation of religious priests with pontifical status-Head Office Aluva) which is the settler of Divyahrudayashram Chennaipara. Now Karunya Nikethan is a combined venture of Karunya Charitable Society and Chennaipara Ashram. The partially completed house now has in it 21 inmates and 2 volunteers .The aim of Karunya Nikethan is to make a home which can accommodate the inmates back in to the mainstream of the society where they can stand on their own, to find out their own livelihood and dignity. Actually it is the generosity of the people of Chengalore and also non-residents of Chengalore that has helped us in all the activities we have done until now. There is also a group of young men who have toiled in the initial stage of Karunya Nikethan and we remember them with a heart brimming over with gratitude and offer them before the gracious God.
